The Times They Are A Changin’
– Bob Dylan
Thank you for taking the time out of your day to read a little more about what I am doing and why I think it may make your life a little easier.
For the past decade I have been working with clients, large (Fortune 500) and small (one person startups), helping them to develop business dashboards and data visualization tools. Along the way, I worked on several successful data visualization open source projects, and founded one of my own; axiis. But, that was several years ago, and as Bob Dylan says “the times they are a-changin.”
Fast forward to today. Mike Bostock developed the fantastic open source library d3.js, which has become the de-facto standard for data visualization. We now have hundreds of thousands of people developing data visualizations around the world – just a few years ago, there were probably only a few hundred of us.
With so many advances in the industry and so many people developing new visualizations every day, I wanted to figure out a way to make a larger impact than just working with a handful of clients every year. This has lead me to create VIZULY.
Vizuly is an open source library that makes it super easy to develop your own data visualizations**. It is a very lightweight framework that uses D3.js as its core and handles the heavy lifting of making robust and reusable data visualization components.
On top of the open source framework, I have created a few components of my own for sale. I have started with the basic charting components that are used almost everywhere and have also included a few more advanced visualizations that many people have asked me for. I have spent a lot of time thinking through how to implement themes and skins, so you can radically change the look and feel of a visualzaiton in just minutes by modifying one of our themes or creating your own. Vizuly is a great way to learn how to make your own data visualizations or quickly implement some of the ones I have already built for you.
My goal is to provide components at a price point where anyone would think “OMG, This is a no brainer and will save me a ton of time, I would be crazy not to just buy it now!” and “Oh Yeah, these look pretty awesome too.”
There are so many cools details about vizuly that I want to share with you but that will have to be left for subsequent blog posts. We are not quite “live” yet, but please feel free to poke around and let me know what you think of vizuly.io.
Stay tuned for some exciting announcements coming over the next couple of days as we prepare to launch on the 22nd of March!
